Steph had been “professionally queer” serving as the Diversity Center’s Development Coordinator for several years. Shaun Ordinario had been a local hero and leader of LGBTQ youth programs and initiatives.
February of 2012, KSCO 1080 AM reached out to the local LGBT community in search of hosts for an LGBTQ radio show. Steph and Shaun opted to speak to KSCO regarding the opportunity. Out in Santa Cruz was officially born. June 22, 2013,
Steph found a popular blogger who happened to live locally. She inquired about having him on the show. Rob Watson first guest starred on Out in Santa Cruz on July 27, 2013 talking about the Russia “gay propaganda” laws and the following years olympics.
Rob began to make guest appearances on Out in Santa Cruz. February of 2014 Steph and Shaun asked Rob if he would be interested in becoming the Out in Santa Cruz team. March 22, 2014, Rob joined as an official co-host and produced a show featuring the family he had written in which a gay teenage boy was saved by a local family as his biological family rejected him. The show was featured on Queerty, and went viral. It helped establish Out in Santa Cruz as one of the premier LGBT broadcasts in the nation.
Shaun departed the team at the beginning of 2015. His technical expertise still drives the show and we miss him to this day.
The rest is history…
